4 ways to avoid (or get over) failure

Don’t let the fear of failure stop you from achieving your sustainability goals for your library or organisation.

  1. Listen to Oprah: “You can have it all.  Just not all at once’”.  Don’t try to bring about too many changes all at the same time.  Identify the most urgent or important goal and focus on that first.  Focusing on one goal is more achievable,  allowing you to concentrate your energy.  When you successfully achieve that goal, your feelings of success will give you confidence to try for more.
  2. Find like-minded people who share your passion for creating a more sustainable workplace and team up.  We can’t achieve real change without genuine support from others.  Additionally, you don’t want to waste all your hard work – if you leave the organisation, you want others to take up your mantle and continue the good work.

3. Be clear about the objectives you want to achieve and why it is important to make the change.  Be clear and concise, not just with others within your community, but also with yourself.  If you have clear goals, emphatic data and a powerful reason, you are more likely to be successful; and, most importantly

4. If something you try fails, don’t give up!  Approach it from another angle or move onto another worthwhile goal and come back to it later.  Think to yourself, what can I learn from the failure and what will I do differently next time?
